Talkin' Trash

I encounter lots of trash as I walk through the Lubberland conservation area in Newmarket/Durham NH so I bring a bag with me as I walk to pick up and discard the trash I find.

Support Local Farms

I joined a local CSA last year here in Boston called The Food Project.  Their sustainable agriculture provides fresh, locally-grown food to communities throughout the Boston metro, including farmers' markets within inner-city communities that might otherwise not have access to affordable local produce.  A significant percentage of their harvest is donated to local food pantries.  The Food Project also connects youth from the suburbs with kids from the city, allowing them to work together on the farm and form friendships that otherwise would never have been realized.  Knowing that most of the produce I consume for about 25 weeks each year helps me realize that I've lowered my carbon footprint by supporting local farms.  Their produce is consumed close to where its grown, and not trucked across country.

Travelin' Green

I travel almost 8 months out of the year so instead of using hotel coffee cups and bottled water I carry my travel mug to be filled throughout the day.

Newspaper Bags

I've found that the plastic bag the newspaper comes in is excellent for taking on walks with my dog (if you know what i mean). You stick your hand in the plastic bag then turn it inside out when picking up what needs to be picked up.

Educate

Educate by example.  Reach out to schools. Show children ways to get involved through sharing of your experiences as picture slide show/talk, hike around the school yard/observe, or bring examples into the class/collections. You become a nature mentor to one or all.

Put Your Paper Towel to Work

I drain washed lettuce on paper towels (quite a few are used) and then use the moist towels to clean up.  They are great for "mopping" a small kitchen/bath floor.

Make a Kite

Make a kite out of a trash bag and some wooden dowels, then go fly it in a field of wildflowers. This is super cheap and hours of fun.

Start a Nature Journal

Start a nature journal - to write down your observations for what plants or animals are coming out or back to your area...such as birds...what plants are budding out or what trees leaf out first. Maybe you would like to learn to sketch out some of your observations.
